ASSET PROCESS ยท CAPITALIZE
How does an acquisition become a fixed asset?
Procurement or direct accounting posts acquisition value to an asset under construction or final asset master.
How SAP controls it
Asset classes, number ranges, account determination, capitalization dates, depreciation areas, and integration with Purchasing shape posting.
The machine invoice capitalizes to an asset under construction while installation continues.
PRACTICAL DECISION
Prove what entered the asset and when
The acquisition path can begin with a direct accounting entry or a purchase order and supplier invoice. The source evidence determines whether value belongs on an asset under construction or on an asset ready for use.
FOLLOW THE EVIDENCE
How to work through this capability
Confirm the asset identity
Check the company code, asset class, responsible location, cost center, and depreciation areas before posting. These fields determine reporting and may affect account determination.
Trace the acquisition source
For a purchase, follow the PO, receipt or service acceptance, invoice, and accounting document. For a direct entry, retain the business reason and authorization for bypassing Purchasing.
Establish the usable date
Keep construction costs on the appropriate interim object until the asset is ready for its intended use. Confirm the capitalization date and settlement path before depreciation begins.
CHECK THE RESULT
What evidence should agree?
Reconcile the supplier or direct posting to the asset transaction, asset value, and general-ledger balance. Review invoice price, tax treatment, freight or installation costs, and any credit or reversal separately so the acquired value is explainable.
A received machine is not automatically ready to depreciate. If commissioning remains open, keep the readiness decision and related costs visible instead of using the invoice date as a shortcut.
